NBC Initiates 'Love the Riel' Campaign in Celebration of the Currency's 44th Anniversary

Phnom Penh, March 21, 2024 – In a move commemorating the 44th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Riel, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has unveiled the 'Love the Riel' campaign. This initiative is designed to foster a deeper appreciation for Cambodia's national currency and to promote its sustainability and development.

The NBC announced this innovative campaign on March 19, inviting the public to participate in an exchange program that allows for the swapping of old and worn Riel banknotes for new ones. The campaign, which runs from March 20 to March 29, is being conducted in collaboration with banking and financial institutions across all capital, provincial, and municipal regions.

The theme 'Riel, Sustainability, Development' underscores the campaign's goal to bolster confidence in and the utility of the Riel, encouraging its use across the nation's economic activities. The public is encouraged to visit their nearest banking and financial institutions to engage in the banknote exchange, facilitating a direct involvement in the campaign's efforts to rejuvenate the national currency.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in the history of the Riel, which was reintroduced and reprinted on March 20, 1980, following a period of economic upheaval. By revitalizing the currency through the 'Love the Riel' campaign, the NBC aims to strengthen the national economy and promote a sustainable financial future for Cambodia.
